Patient Safety Week

Patient Safety Week, observed this year between March 10-16, provides an opportunity to acknowledge the dedication and effort involved in creating secure environments for patients, staff, and visitors. In this spotlight, we’ll hear from our very own Tyler Bell, the Director of Facilities for Sublette County Hospital District, who shares insights into the crucial role played by the Facilities Management Department in upholding the highest standards of safety within SC Health facilities.

Overview of Facilities Management's Role

"Staff safety, patient safety, and security are the number one priority," says Bell. The Facilities Management Department maintains facilities through continuous upkeep, building inspections, and maintenance, ensuring a foundation that is not only clean and presentable but also operational and safe.

Measures and Protocols for Safety

Bell outlines the department's comprehensive approach, stating, "A safe environment not only includes the interior but exterior features." He emphasizes the availability of contractors and staff around the clock for maintenance needs after hours. A secure environment is maintained through controlled access, video surveillance, and attention to sensitive areas, while utilities, backup power systems, ventilation, humidity, lighting, and waste management are meticulously managed to meet regulatory requirements.

Collaboration with Other Departments

In highlighting the importance of communication, Bell notes that the Facilities Department maintains "an open line of communication through staff meetings, safety committee meetings, phone, and e-mail." This collaborative culture ensures a unified commitment to safety across all departments, addressing safety concerns promptly.

Emergency Preparedness and Response

For emergency preparedness, Bell mentions "tabletop discussions in which emergency scenarios are created." The Facilities Management Department collaborates with county Emergency Management Services and other departments, conducting exercises and policy reviews to keep staff well-informed for a quick and effective response to unforeseen events impacting patient safety.

Message to the Community

As Patient Safety Week is observed, Bell conveys a resounding message to the community, stating, "The facilities department is fully committed to our community, staff, and patients." Positioned as the hub of healthcare, the department pledges to always strive for a "safe, clean, and secure environment," and reinforce the foundation of trust essential for quality healthcare delivery at SC Health facilities.

The efforts of the Facilities Department to maintain safe, secure, and operational facilities contribute directly to the well-being of our patients, staff, and community. Their pursuit of safety goes beyond compliance; it's a testament to their commitment to creating a truly exceptional healthcare experience. Thank you, Facilities Management team, for ensuring that SC Health remains a safe haven for healing and a beacon of trust in our community. Remember, your contribution is invaluable, and your dedication truly makes a difference!
